DEAD WHITE MAN’S CLOTHES
A printed study of how secondhand fashion’s end-of-pipeline waste is exported to the Global South as a means of convenient Western disposal. This offloading of burden incurs both social and ecological consequences across (primarily) Africa and its diasporas and—when documented—is subject to a Western lens that forgoes the utilitarian realities of second-hand markets in favor of shareable spectacle.
Extracting the semiotically-charged design of the shirt, we can see the garment’s two lives in vivid contrast—as both object of utility worn by a human being and visual-cultural bearer of written connotation.
By replicating the typography and language of the discarded secondhand clothing this book covers, fullbleed chapter spreads juxtapose the shirts’ satirized messaging against a background of its consequence.
